You can consume cannabis in your home, backyard, back porch or on any private residence while out of the view of the public.
Those who rent are subject to the rules established by their landlords related to cannabis possession and consumption. Additionally, Illinois does not allow for cannabis consumption on a school bus or on school grounds, in a correctional facility or while operating, navigating or being in actual physical contact with a car, boat or aircraft.
While medical and recreational cannabis is legal in the state of Illinois, please remember that cannabis is still Illegal on the federal level. Therefore, it is illegal to cross state lines, board a plane or be on any federal property while in possession of cannabis or cannabis products. Federally it is classified as a Class 1 Controlled Substance.
Amounts set forth by the state of Illinois based on possession limits:
Illinois residents (those with a valid Illinois ID) can purchase: up to 30 grams of flower, 5 grams concentrate and 500 mg THC for edibles and infused product per visit.
Out of state with valid ID can purchase: up to 15 grams of flower, 2.5 grams concentrate and 250 mg THC for edibles and infused product per visit
These totals are cumulative, meaning a person 21 years of age or older may possess a combination of cannabis flower, cannabis-infused products, and cannabis concentrates up to the limit for each category of product.
While a motor vehicle is in operation, cannabis must be in a sealed, odor-proof, child-resistant container. It is a Class A misdemeanor to transport cannabis in any other type of container.
Cannabis cannot be used in a motor vehicle.
