A group of high school students who called themselves “The Waldos” would meet after school at 4:20 PM near a statue of Louis Pasteur on their campus. The phrase spread quietly through Grateful Dead fan communities, known as Deadheads, who circulated the term at concerts throughout the 1970s and 1980s. By 1998, High Times magazine had published the Waldos’ story, and the term reached a national audience.
