Those laws are changing, too, so it’s good to get up to date before your next dispensary visit. That way you’ll know how much weed you can buy, where you can use it, and not have to worry that your purchase is violating Illinois state law.
Illinois Cannabis Law at a Glance
Illinois recreational weed has been legal for adults 21 and over since 2020. Marijuana legalization means you can shop at a licensed adult-use dispensary with a valid government-issued ID, and you do not have to be an Illinois resident to make a purchase.
But Illinois weed laws also cover possession and transportation. Cannabis can’t be taken across state lines, even if you are traveling between two states where weed is legal, because it’s still illegal under federal law. That’s also why cannabis is prohibited on all federal property (including National Parks).
Medical vs. Recreational: What’s the Difference?
The biggest difference between recreational and medical weed rules in Illinois is who qualifies.
Recreational cannabis is available to any adult over age 21 with a valid ID. Illinois medical weed is available through the state’s Medical Cannabis Patient Registry Program.
Registered qualifying patients and caregivers can purchase through dispensaries licensed for medical cannabis sales. Medical patients have separate possession rules, may qualify for a higher allowance and medical authorization, and can grow up to five cannabis plants at home if they meet state requirements.
2026 Purchase Limit Update
As of June 12, 2026, the state doubled the Illinois purchase limits for cannabis products. That means the current 2026 Illinois cannabis limits are:
- 60 grams of cannabis flower
- 10 grams of cannabis concentrate
- 1,000 milligrams of THC in cannabis-infused products
You can possess products from more than one category at the same time, as long as you stay within the legal limit for each. The law treats each one separately.

What Residents vs. Visitors Should Know
You don’t need an Illinois address to shop at a recreational dispensary, but non-residents have lower limits. Adults aged 21 and over who live outside of Illinois can possess:
- 30 grams of cannabis flower
- 5 grams of cannabis concentrate
- 500 milligrams of THC in cannabis-infused products
If you are visiting Terrace from Missouri or another nearby state, remember that a legal purchase here does not make it legal to transport the products across state lines. If you buy cannabis products in Illinois, keep them in Illinois.
Where You Can and Can’t Consume
Cannabis legalization does not mean you can legally consume cannabis in public.
You are not allowed to smoke, vape, eat, or otherwise consume cannabis in public places, even if you are sitting in your own vehicle. Private properties can allow cannabis use, but it’s up to the individual property owners to set the rules. Your house, your rules. Their house, their rules.
Driving while impaired is also illegal. If cannabis is part of your plans, make sure getting home safely is part of them, too.
