Illinois recently approved several updates to the state’s cannabis laws, bringing changes that affect both licensed dispensaries and the people who shop at them. While many of the updates happen behind the scenes, a few directly impact the customer experience.
One of the biggest changes gives dispensaries the option to stay open later than ever before, pending local approval. That change is already making a difference at Terrace Cannabis Milan, where extended evening hours begin Thursday, July 16.
Here’s a look at what changed and what it means for Illinois cannabis shoppers.
Have Illinois cannabis purchase limits changed?
Yes. Illinois has increased both purchase and possession limits for adult-use cannabis. The updated limits took effect on June 12, 2026, allowing adults to purchase more cannabis in a single visit than they could under the previous law.
The changes apply to both Illinois residents and visitors, although the limits are different depending on where you live.
Illinois Residents Cannabis Limit
Illinois residents who are 21 or older can now purchase up to 60 grams of cannabis flower, 10 grams of concentrates, and 1,000 milligrams of THC in infused products, such as edibles.
Those limits are double what residents were previously allowed to purchase, giving shoppers more flexibility when stocking up.
Illinois Visitors Cannabis Limit
Out-of-state visitors also benefit from higher purchase limits. Adults visiting Illinois can now purchase up to 30 grams of flower, 5 grams of concentrates, and 500 milligrams of THC in infused products.
As always, cannabis must be used in accordance with Illinois law, and transporting cannabis across state lines remains illegal.
How Late Can Illinois Dispensaries Stay Open?
For years, Illinois dispensaries had to close by 10:00 PM.
Under the new law, licensed dispensaries may now extend their operating hours until 2:00 AM, provided they receive approval from their local municipality and notify the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
That creates more flexibility for both businesses and customers, especially those who work evenings or simply prefer shopping later at night.
Beginning Thursday, July 16, Terrace Cannabis Milan will be open until 2:00 AM every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The extended hours currently apply only to the Milan location.
Other Illinois Cannabis Law Changes
Not every update affects customers directly.
The legislation also allows dispensaries to:
- Offer curbside pickup and drive-through service after receiving state approval.
- Hire in-house security guards instead of contracting with third-party companies.
- Reduce required security camera storage from 90 days to 60 days.
- Make several licensing and operational updates that simplify compliance for dispensaries.
Most shoppers won’t notice these operational changes, but they’re part of a broader effort to modernize Illinois’ cannabis industry.
Late-Night Shopping Coming to Milan
One of the first customer-facing changes you’ll notice is Terrace Cannabis Milan’s expanded hours.
Starting July 16, the Milan dispensary will remain open until 2:00 AM every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, making it one of the first dispensaries in the area to take advantage of the new law.
The Moline location will continue operating under its current schedule.
